Bakery owner Hannah Swensen is leaving Lake Eden to help a friend in sunny California. But an unexpected phone call swiftly brings her back to a cold Minnesota winter--and murder ... When Hannah learns that her sister Michelle's boyfriend, Detective Lonnie Murphy, is the prime suspect in a murder case, she goes straight from a movie studio sound stage to the Los Angeles airport. Back in frigid Minnesota, she discovers that proving Lonnie's innocence will be harder than figuring out what went wrong with a recipe. Lonnie remembers only parts of the night he went out to a local bar and ended up driving a very impaired woman home. He knows he helped her to her bedroom, but he doesn't recall anything else until he woke up on her couch the following morning. When he went to the bedroom to check on her, he was shocked to discover she was dead. Hannah doesn't know what to believe--only that exonerating a suspect who can't remember is almost impossible, especially since Lonnie's brother, Detective Rick Murphy, and Lonnie's partner, Chief Detective Mike Kingston, have been taken off the case. Before everything comes crashing down on Lonnie like a heaping slice of coconut layer cake, it'll be up to Hannah to rack up enough clues to toast a flaky killer"-- Provided by publisher.

I agree with the comments.

gosh, the amount of cookies, cakes, and pies they eat ... nothing else. Murder solving is barely in the story until the end, talks about everything else. Few chapters describe how a dessert is made and then the recipe is given at the end of the chapter. One third of the book is recipes and two thirds is nonsense. Imagine, a detective telling Hannah to solve the mystery - ridiculous

no more for me, may try the other novels written by Ms. Fluke - hope there's less jealousy, Hannah gets upset if Norman or Mike dates other ladies and yet she won't commit to either one.

the series has run out of gas.... and really needs to end.

like another reviewer, I wouldn't have finished if it wasn't for the pandemic..... I have read most of the series and honestly it now just makes me sad......

The author is seriously struggling to provide any content here, I didn’t think this series could get any worse. Man, was I wrong!
Do we really need to know that Hannah doesn’t have the newest model microwave on the market, so it took 30 seconds longer to make “cake in a mug” in her microwave? Plus the instructions in the 3 page recipe?
I wouldn’t bother finishing this if it weren’t for the fact I can’t get anymore books right now.
Boo :(

Again, not much of a plot. Probably a couple of chapters is dedicated to the murder and the rest is about baking, and "fluff". Also, it was so obvious who the murderer was. Overall, the books in this series is going downhill. I think it's time to retire the book series because the author is clearly running out of ideas.

Cozy, quick read. Not much happens except a LOT of baking. I almost could read some notes of finality in the last chapter, and so I wonder if this series is winding to an end? #teamnorman all the way!
