A girl from the hood who can't shake off self-doubt was thrust front and center to lead, a motley space pirate crew that leaped from the page/tablet, an almost omnipotent AI with its old Scottish master who instigated a terrible, terrible act, a damsel in distress and a super-soldier in distress, too. All these colorful characters and more in this engaging space opera -- gore and metal flying everywhere but not without its abundant comical/tender moments.
However, past the middle point, it seemed the author tried hard to gather the separate story lines together -- perhaps overly conveniently. Still a fun read, though. Looking forward to a follow-up.

Fun read. Engaging, but I felt like some of the characters could have used more development/screen time, though that is a personal preference. With possibly more books on the way, that may change. I do hope to see more of this world.

I've been a John Birmingham fan for years, and was very eager to read this book. The first 100 pages or so were a tad disappointing. It focuses way too much on world building and not character development. There is a lot to explain about this world, but it comes off as overwhelming and even a bit dull. If this seems harsh, it is only because my expectations were so high. However, once the story truly begins, it's a five star space opera. I would definitely recommend, and look forward to more.

This is fantastic military space opera! It deserves a four-star rating in just about every aspect. The one flaw is how the author brings the main characters together for the climax: it's just a bit too contrived to be believable. Without that flaw, I wouldn't hesitate to give it four stars. It's a good recommendation for fans of The Expanse.
