Contrary to popular belief, best friends Kate Garfield and Anderson Walker are not codependent. Carpooling to and from theater rehearsals? Environmentally sound and efficient. Consulting each other on every single life decision? Basic good judgment. Pining for the same guys from afar? Shared crushes are more fun anyway. But when Kate and Andy's latest long-distance crush shows up at their school, everything goes off-script. Matt Olsson is talented and sweet, and Kate likes him. She really likes him. The only problem? So does Anderson. Turns out, communal crushes aren't so fun when real feelings are involved. This one might even bring the curtains down on Kate and Anderson's friendship.

I loved this book! I really like how the author brought this bonding friendship and showed how even the best of friends can have problems.

A delightful new book from New York Times best-selling author Becky Albertalli! Kate navigates friendship and romance in this fun novel set against high school musical theatre. Fast-paced chapters and dialogue keep readers engaged to the very end. I highly recommend this one for fans of lighthearted character-driven reads!

This book broke me out of my reading slump, and for that I will be forever grateful. Becky Albertalli’s Kate in Waiting was highly anticipated for me, and it completely delivered. The writing flowed so smoothly, the character dynamics felt authentic, and the portrayal of musical theatre was (based on my admittedly limited experience) wonderfully realistic. I also have to say that I really appreciated the Jewish representation in this book, as well as the focus on friendship. The story is very much character driven, which, considering that the characters were an absolute delight, worked very well! That’s not to say that they aren’t flawed; Kate, the main character, could be somewhat petty at times, which I didn’t love. Moreover, a bit too much of the conflict stemmed from lack of communication for my taste, and for that, I’d have to give the book 4/5 stars. Kate in Waiting certainly isn’t for everyone—but if you’re a fan of Albertalli’s other work, I’d highly recommend you give it a try! -@Ayama of the Hamilton Public Library's Teen Review Board
