A twelve-year-old girl and her younger brother go on the run in the woods of North Idaho, pursued by four men they have just watched commit murder--four men who know exactly who William and Annie are, and who know exactly where their desperate mother is waiting for news of her children's fate. Retired cops from Los Angeles, the killers easily persuade the inexperienced sheriff to let them lead the search for the missing children. William and Annie's unexpected savior comes in the form of an old-school rancher teetering on the brink of foreclosure.--From publisher description.

Nice stand-alone novel, creating characters I would like to see again. One thing I didn't like in this audio version was the accents given to anyone with a Spanish last name. Made them sound more like recent immigrants than regular citizens. Kind of prejudice I doubt the author intended upon writing. One of these Hispanic characters was also known as a great mimic, and could do voices of many people; why then make him sound like a punk from East LA?

Kids happen upon a murder and must keep out of the hands of the bad guys - who are posing as good guys! Not only that but there are somewhat nuanced bad guys, a likable hero or two, and a tender, wistful ending.

Usually when the good guys win, they live. In this case, the good guys were shot and killed and died. Apparently C J believes in an afterlife. Good for the good guys. The good guys were suffering angst. Seems their death provided peace. Still it was a happy ending. JJ went back to the ranch. Possibly being joined by Monica. The loss of their loved ones was sad. But their lives seem to be healed. Very interesting ending. Pretty cool.

Not nearly as good as the Joe Pickett novels.

Already a huge fan of his Joe Pickett novels I was delighted with Box's stand-alone thriller. I do hope we can expect more such novels from this gifted author.

A few good old boys in a small town near the Idaho and Washington border fought to save a couple of kids from four ruthless retired L.A. cops. Other than a few outrageous mistakes that the author seemed to insert in the story to add suspense, it was fast paced with enough actions to make it a very good read.
