Short and easy enough for a third-grader to read alone, yet filled with the complex aspects of complete human beings and their relationships. It's Patricia MacLachlan, after all, and she doesn't disappoint. Yes, it has magic enough for a kind of humble, homey excitement. And charm enough for an adult reader. But it's not a general readaloud since it deals with the temporary dissolution of a nuclear family. Uncommonly, all's well that ends well (Dad only left to try his hand at writing; he "forgot" for awhile how important his family was.), so take your chances on the young person you may hand it to. MacLachlan's own magic is pervasive. This book glows with warmth and love.
