"Louis Sachar's Holes, is a realistic adventure fiction masterpiece. The plot of this book is that the main character, Stanley Yelnats, is wrongly accused of stealing a famous baseball player's shoes. At court, he is given an option on whether he wants to go to jail, or go to camp greenwood. Since Stanley has never gone to a camp before because his family is poor, he picks camp greenwood. After all, who would think that a camp could be a punishment? But little did he know what horrors awaited him there. I absolutely loved this book. It was vividly descriptive and transported me into another world while I was reading it. I especially liked when the author went back in time to connect the story. This book's plot twist in this book seemed like it popped out of nowhere, it was very exciting. I haven't read the next book in the series yet, but I definitely will since this book was so great. It only took me 3 days to finish it! Without a doubt, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who likes books that are extremely adventurous and have to do with finding treasure." -Tom, Grade 7 "Holes by Louis Sachar is a Adventure fiction novel. This book follows Stanley Yelnats as he is sentenced to go to Camp Green Lake, after being accused of something that he did not do. Camp Green Lake is a bootcamp in the desert, and when he gets there he discovers that the only thing you do all day is dig a hole that is 5 feet deep and 5 feet long. Throughout the novel you learn more about what Stanley was accused of, the people that Stanley meets at Camp Green Lake, and why exactly the warden of the camp is making all these kids dig holes deep in the desert. I really liked reading this book. One of the things I liked about it is how interesting the plot is and there are no boring or filler parts of the book. This book shows you that no matter what happens to you in life, always try to work through it and don’t give up. This book also shows the importance of friendships and relationships and how your friends could help you get through hard times. In conclusion, I would recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure and fiction books. This book has a really interesting plot with a good ending, unlike some other adventure books. I also liked the movie that was made based off this book." -Aarav, Grade 9 "A book with intriguing worldbuilding and a captivative, yet simplistic writing style, Holes by Louis Sachar will definitely keep a reader’s eyes glued to its pages. This book is about a boy named Stanley Yelnats, who was sent to a boys’ juvenile detention center for a crime he didn’t commit. The Warden says that the toil is for character building, but Stanley needs to uncover the truth. I loved the gradual rising action in this book, and the climax was particularly thrilling. There’s a lot of great character building, and it seemed as if I were really with the character, scraping at the ground in the scorching sun. The embedded narratives were also a very good touch, and provided a lot of nice background to the story. This was a great read! 5 stars." -Leshui, Grade 8
