The Indian in The Cupboard is one of my personal all-time favorite books. The book is about a young boy named Omir who receives a cupboard from his brother on his birthday. Little does Omir know that the cupboard is actually "magical." The cupboard has a "magical" key that was owned by his great-grandmother that will allow the figures to turn to life. Omri has an Indian placed in the cupboard by the name of Little Bear and when locks and unlocks the cupboard Little Bill becomes alive. Omri has a friend by the name of Patrick that he tells about the cupboard who turns a cowboy by the name of Boone into life. Omri tells Patrick that this is a bad idea, which he was correct about. Little Bear and Boone began to fight and shot at each other and Omri and Patrick must separate the two. Omri and Patrick keep the two for a while and then one night while watching cowboys and Indians on television Little Bear begins to have flashbacks and shots Boone and injuries him. Omri has a World War I doctor that could treat the wound but Omri has loss the key. Omri makes an effort to find the key. The key was found down in the floor; however this poses a problem because Omri's brother rat escaped from its cage. Omri sends Little Bear down in the floor to find the key and Little Bear is able to escape the rat and recover the key. Boone is then treated. At the end of the story Little Bear decides that he wants a wife and Omri brings Bright Star to life so that she and Little Bear can get married. Omri then decides one day that it would be best to send Little Bear, Boone, and Bright Star back to where they belong and he does so. Omri then gives the key to his mother so that he is not tempted to bring them back to life. This book is about how a small boy learns the value of his toys and it even teaches a little history about Indians and cowboys.
