A Mad Catastrophe

the Outbreak of World War I and the Collapse of the Habsburg Empire

This is a well-researched and beautifully-written book, covering an aspect of WWI that is sparsely observed in the literature. It describes the disintegration of the Austro-Hungarian "Imperial" army. All of the empire's weaknesses (splintered ethnicity, regional rivalry, inept funding and organization throughout the government) destroyed the effectiveness of the ill-led army and led to ruin.
