This was a gift from someone who recommended it highly, so I persevered longer than I would have otherwise. Then I realized this book is leaving me cold because it's lad lit -- male author, male protagonist, a little riff on male coming-of-age, male mentor.... I have greatly enjoyed other books with some of these same characteristics, but in Harry Quebert, the female protagonist is a dead 15-year-old with whom a 34-year-old man had an affair. The female protagonist is dead. The female protagonist is a child with whom an adult man had an affair. Enough. On to one of the hundreds of other books on my shelves.
