In the author’s own words Sinner is a “summer-hot, neon-pink, sand-blasted-kiss vacation” and that is just what it feels like. Tense, fraught and begging the question of what makes us human, Sinner is the final encounter with the wolves first met in Stiefvater’s Mercy Falls trilogy. Cole St. Clair, perpetual addict, has arrived in L.A. looking for Isabel Culpepper, perpetual survivor, and the collusion of their reunion sets L.A. on fire…literally. What could have felt incredibly trite – badboy werewolf musician falls for damaged beautiful ice queen – instead offers something sweet, volatile, sexy and raw. Rather than dwell on where Cole and Isabel have been before, Sinner begs the question of whether they have anywhere to go and whether two broken people can ease off the edge of just surviving and find a path back towards living. Here is a story that asks for forgiveness, that begs for acceptance and hopes for another chance. It is beautiful.
