This book is a slight departure from Danielle Steel's usual formula in that the leading character is a young man not a Superwoman. The story starts off with Jakob and Emanuelle at the Buchwald concentration camp, their move to America and success due to hard work. Max, their son, grows up sheltered in their love and is determined to prove himself by his own efforts. He does so and becomes a tycoon much talked about. Max chooses Julie to be his wife. Emanuelle and Jakob don't think she is the right person for him but don't say so. When the marriage gets rocky, Steel does not blame only Julie. Instead she blames Max too. This makes for more realistic novel.
