Skyhunter by Marie Lu follows the story of Talin, a refugee and talented striker of Mara, as she and her friends defend the country of Mara against the power-hungry Karensa Federation. There is someone who is essential to this fight - Red. Red is a skyhunter who fled from the Karensa Federation after torturous things were inflicted upon him and his family. Together, Talin, Red, Jerman, and Adena risk their lives to protect the last free nation and rid the evil Federation. Personally, I wasn’t incredibly impressed by this book, mostly because I don’t really enjoy sci-fi books that much, but it would be great for someone who does enjoy that genre! There were also many fighting scenes, which to me felt slightly repetitive. However, if you enjoy action, you would definitely love it! Although there were a few things that I personally disliked due to my own preferences in books, there were many elements that I did enjoy. For example, my favorite thing were the complex characters and how each character had their own unique story. Lu didn’t solely focus on developing the main character, Talin, but instead built intriguing supporting characters, like Jerman. Another thing I enjoyed was the world building and the descriptions of the book. Moreover, a unique aspect to this book was the form of communication used. Typically in books, they use their voice to talk as the sole source of communication but in this book, there was sign language, telepathy, and of course, talking. Having these three methods of communication added a special element to the story. Overall, I enjoyed many aspects of the book, but as someone who doesn’t enjoy much sci-fi, it wasn’t for me. It was okay but not really memorable. Nonetheless, I’m certain that it would suit other people’s tastes!
